Any time a person engages in sexual activity with a partner, there is a chance of contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Condoms and other barrier methods may help to reduce certain risks of contracting an STD, but these methods are only a type of risk reduction, not risk elimination. Many STDs show no signs of symptoms. It is important to be tested regularly.
If a person is sexually active, they are at risk for a sexually transmitted disease. Many STDs are curable so long as they are caught early enough and have no long-term effects. If an STD is left untreated it can cause damage, sometimes even permanent damage. This is why consistent testing and early detection are important. Even if you were sexually active and you are not showing any signs or symptoms, you could still have an STD and you can still transmit it to your partner(s). Even if your partner says they have been tested, there is no way to verify that. The only way to ensure that you do not contract an STD is to not have sex or engage in sex-like activities with a partner(s).
